Skin irritation on my German/Belgium Shepherd

When I went home yesterday, I noticed that my one male German Shepherd had a “hot-spot” on his back. This is normally caused by flees (or so I thought). I was obviously very disturbed as all our animals are treated against flees and ticks regularly once a month.
I contacted the PDSA in Bridgetown immediately as they have been treating all our animals for years. I spoke to Arthur George, The Hospital Manager, and he told me to have my “baby Jed” there by 08h30 this morning. I decided to leave home early and was at the facility by 08h00 and waited in line for my turn.
There were quite a variety of animals, from “scruffels” (dog) to the Queen of Sheba (beautiful cat), that were brought in to be treated.
After a couple minutes we were called to come through to the examination room and were welcomed by a very friendly lady, called Melanie. She examined Jed and told me that it was definitely not a flee allergy, but looks like it could be food related. Jed was as good as gold while being examined. She cut all the hair around the area on his back where the inflammation was, cleaned it with an anti-septic soap and put on some Zinc & Castor Oil Ointment. This is to dry the area out.
I mentioned to Melanie that the dogs sometimes have a swim in the sea and I thought that this might help with the healing process. She told me to keep Jed out of the sea water as this will only aggravate the inflammation. They say you learn something new every day. Thanks Melanie.
Just before we left, Melanie gave me some Prednisone & Betemor (500mg) tablets to give to Jed everyday for the next few days. She also suggested a Vitamin & Essential Fatty Acid Supplement called, Mirra-Cote to put on his food every morning and evening.
I was able to purchase the Mirra-Cote supplement from the PDSA @ R40.00 (which I thought was very reasonable).
I will report back in a day or two to give you feedback on the treatment.
