What to do to a dog to test if he will be okay with my baby?

I have a 10 month old son and we were going to get a puppy in the spring…however, there is a dog that is in need of a home now but he is already 9 months old. He is not neutered but we will have that done immediately.

I’d love to take him in and give him his forever home but I am worried about him being older now and my son being so young. He is a Great Dane/Rhodesian Ridgeback. I am going to meet him and I will put him on his back and see how long it takes before he struggles. I will pull on his ears, his tail and grab his fur like my son probably would. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I’ve always had German Shepherds and I’ve raised them from 6-8 weeks onwards. So my dogs were always great with babies, children, and adult strangers alike. I would love to give this guy a home but I just want to make sure my very active infant son is safe.

That’s hard however good choice on doing the things your son may do to the dog. Introducing would be the hardest thing to do, but still the dog is still pretty young and would probably be fine as long as for a few months you keep a close eye on the baby and the dog. Dogs, once used to their known place in your family would be fine with the child alone. Try to see if the dog is fine being around small children first then see if your son and dog would work out fine, and dont forget to teach your child how to behave towords the dog and to teach him to respect the dog as a living and breatheing animal.

Border collie/black lab problems?

OK, so I’ve have a border collie/black lab for over 2 months now. He is currently 5 and a half months. He is VERY naughty.. Whenever I go outside he constantly jumps on me, nips at my heels, or bites on my clothes or hands. I can not take him to a trainer because we can’t afford it… I know he needs good exercise but every time i try to take him for a walk he jumps bites etc. while we are walking and becomes very annoying.. He is a outside dog because my parents will not let him inside. I do say “NO” and other things in a deep voice to tell him to stop, but he still seems to do it.. please help.

Dogs are pack animals and shouldn’t be kept outside. Additionally, Border Collies are extremely intelligent dogs (in fact, they’re #1 on the breed intelligence rankings) who need incredible amounts of mental and physical stimuli…when denied and left in the back yard, they will become problem dogs and make their own fun in finding their own jobs to do…a few walks a day will not be enough to keep the Border Collie in him satisfied. Labs are an incredibly social breed…dumping them in the back yard without adequate interaction will turn them into problem dogs. All dogs require training, mental and physical exercise, as well as social interaction and affection training along with positive reinforced training, or they will become problem dogs.

Puppies DO NOT learn on their own. You dumped a puppy in the back yard and starved it for what he needs, it’s surprising he’s not worse…it’s NOT too late to turn it around, but you’ve got to do what’s right by him. Seems you’ve not provided what this dog needs to be much of anything but a problem dog. You can still remedy that, but you must take it seriously. If you can’t afford a professional trainer, at least enroll in an obedience class…they are really inexpensive and will teach you the basics of proper handling so you at least have control over him. Then you’ve got to play to this specific mixes strengths…is he more Lab or Border? Find him an outlet to utilize those traits and follow the trainers instructions.

Border Collie Training: The Stay Command

Intelligence isn’t a reason for border collies not to get appropriate border collie training. In fact, training this breed is a necessity so that it will be easier to control them should any untoward situation arises.

One lesson you should teach your border collie is the stay command. Though some dog trainers believe that stay is not needed, it is still important that your furry friend knows how to respond to it to guarantee his safety even if he’s a few meters from you. Provided that he is reliably trained with the command, ordering him to “stay” can prevent him from running after a car, crossing a chaotic street, lunging at your guests and numerous other unwanted behaviors that can be unsafe for him and anyone around.

Training your pet to stay can be simpler achieved when he’s reliably trained with the command sit or down. Put him in the position you want him to stay, be it sit or down. If he remains in the position for a few seconds, praise and reward him with a treat. It is okay if your pet moves away after the reward is given since the procedure has ended.

Just like training other breed of dogs, border collie training is achieved by repetition. Repeat the process but this time around, increase the length of time prior to giving of praise and reward. If your dog moves away before the process is over, correct him with a “no”. Don’t give a reward.

Once your pet understands how the behavior works, add the verbal command. Place him in the position you would like him to stay and say “stay” while holding your hand out, palm facing away. Praise and reward him if he stays for a couple of seconds. Gently increase the time of him staying in the position as well as the distance between you and your dog.

Practicing the command anytime of the day is recommended.
