German Shepherd Irish Setter Mix

Breed recommendation?

We would like to find a suitable companion for my dog, who is a 2 year Irish Setter mix. He’s very sociable, and gets along very well with other dogs. My mom is home all day except when running errands, and I am at school from 8 to 5, during which my mom walks the dog, and I walk him again when I return. We aren’t interested in buying from a breeder, and will probably look at whatever our shelter has to offer, but would still like to find a breed based on the following qualities:

-Medium size, a toy breed wouldn’t be suitable in our home, since my dog is very very big and active. We aren’t fans of Spaniels, so that’s out of the question.

-Preferably lower shed level, but we like long haired dogs.

-A playful, affectionate dog that is highly intelligent and loves interaction.

We like German Shepherd, but they shed year round and are a little too big.

An American Pit Bull Terrier that is dog friendly. You will get the medium size, low shedding, high intelligence and love of interaction with both humans and other dogs.

ADD: I think most answerers missed the part about ‘low shedding’………

Great Dane Puppy Fur

What to do to a dog to test if he will be okay with my baby?

I have a 10 month old son and we were going to get a puppy in the spring…however, there is a dog that is in need of a home now but he is already 9 months old. He is not neutered but we will have that done immediately.

I’d love to take him in and give him his forever home but I am worried about him being older now and my son being so young. He is a Great Dane/Rhodesian Ridgeback. I am going to meet him and I will put him on his back and see how long it takes before he struggles. I will pull on his ears, his tail and grab his fur like my son probably would. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I’ve always had German Shepherds and I’ve raised them from 6-8 weeks onwards. So my dogs were always great with babies, children, and adult strangers alike. I would love to give this guy a home but I just want to make sure my very active infant son is safe.

Thanks in advance for any input.

That’s hard however good choice on doing the things your son may do to the dog. Introducing would be the hardest thing to do, but still the dog is still pretty young and would probably be fine as long as for a few months you keep a close eye on the baby and the dog. Dogs, once used to their known place in your family would be fine with the child alone. Try to see if the dog is fine being around small children first then see if your son and dog would work out fine, and dont forget to teach your child how to behave towords the dog and to teach him to respect the dog as a living and breatheing animal.
